St. Clair Shores, MI—Two boats carrying a total of 10 people collided with one another on Lake St. Clair early Friday, June 2, 2010. The watercraft collision resulted in one fatality and injured six others, according to information provided by the Detroit News.
Reports indicated two vessels were navigating Lake St. Clair after midnight Tuesday. For unknown reasons, the boats became involved in a violent wreck.
Just before 1 a.m., one of the boat’s operators made a mayday call, in which officials were notified that several people were ejected into the water on impact of the crash, according to Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackle.
Though the accident occurred in close proximity to a U.S. Coast Guard station, a vessel owned by a salvage company notably recovered nine of the 10 boating accident victims.
They were then taken to the Coast Guard station, located one-half mile northeast of the crash site, to receive preliminary medical care. The boats’ occupants were subsequently transported to St. John Hospital for treatment.
A dive team from the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office only recovered the 10th victim around 6:30 a.m. The man’s name was not released, likely pending family notification.
Sheriff Hackle also noted a 12-year-old boy suffered injuries believed to be either serious or critical. Another victim also apparently sustained serious injuries in the Lake St. Clair boating accident.
Officials reportedly alleged the watercraft collision may have been attributed to limited light on the lake at the time. However, a full probe will be required to confirm such theories.
