US – Some doctors have suggested that many men are being over-treated for and over-diagnosed with prostate cancer. As reported by LivesScience.com, some doctors say possible incorrect use of testing for early detection of the disease may be an issue.
Richard Ablin, a professor of immunobiology and pathology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, is quoted in the report as stating of the matter, “We’re over-diagnosing it, and we’re over-treating too many men… The way the test is used today is wrong.”
However, a recent study published in the Lancet journal found in a group of Swedish men that prostate cancer screening decreased death rates from the disease by almost fifty percent. The researchers are quoted in the report as stating that despite these findings, “the risk of over-diagnosis is substantial.”
