California – A bill to ban the state mineral in California has reportedly garnered bipartisan support. As reported by the Daily Tech, the bill by Californian state senator Gloria Romero to prohibit Serpentine as being the state mineral due to its asbestos content recently received unanimous passage through an Assembly Committee on National Resources.
Romero is quoted in the report as stating of the issue, “[Serpentine] contains the deadly mineral chrysotile asbestos, a known carcinogen, exposure to which increases the risk of the cancer mesothelioma.”
As noted in the report, if passed the measure could provide funding for asbestos cleanup efforts. Joseph Belluck, an attorney with personal injury law firm Belluck & Fox LLP, is quoted as stating of the legislation, “California lawmakers wish to disassociate their state with a mineral that has caused disease and death for many citizens. It’s an important reminder that all forms of asbestos are deadly.”
