Albuquerque, NM—A domestic dispute caused one man to open fire at an Albuquerque fiber optics manufacturing plant, killing three people and wounding four others before committing suicide. The shooter targeted his live-in girlfriend when he opened fire at Emcore Corp. on Monday, July 13, 2010 at 9:30 a.m., as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

Police officials identified the gunman as Robert Reza, a former Emcore Corp. employee.

According to Albuquerque police Chief Ray Schultz said, “We believe it is a workplace domestic violence situation. The girlfriend, who had told co-workers that she feared for her safety, was among those wounded. The couple’s two children were safe.”

According to preliminary reports, Reza confronted his girlfriend outside, before entering the building and firing over 20 rounds. Authorities say they arrived at the scene about three minutes after receiving the first 911 call.

Officers found one victim lying in the parking lost and panicked workers running from the building. Upon entering the building, officers found Reza dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Bloodied and wounded victims were carried from the building to awaiting ambulances. A total of five people were rushed to the University of New Mexico Hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds.

One victim tragically died while undergoing surgery. Another patient underwent surgery and is in “guarded but solid condition.” One other patient was listed in guarded condition, while two others were listed in stable.

Reza’s girlfriend was reportedly among the victims who were injured.

A full investigation is underway.
