Product Laceration Hazard: Atico International USA, CPSC Recall Bamboo Torches

Fort Lauderdale, FL—Atico International USA Inc., in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), voluntarily recalled approximately 324,000 bamboo torches due to laceration hazards associated with them. The CPSC announced the product safety recall on Wednesday, July 21, 2010.

According to the CPSC, “The fuel canister that holds the wick of the torch has a sharp edge inside the lip of the opening that poses a laceration hazard when consumers try to remove the wick… The firm has received five reports of lacerations to fingers, including one that required stitches. Four of the injuries occurred when consumers were trying to retrieve a wick that had fallen into the canister.”

The potentially hazardous bamboo torches have a black metal canister with a smooth black metal lid and were created to supply consumers with sufficient light in outdoor settings.

The following information was provided as a means of helping consumers confirm whether their bamboo torches are affected by the defective product recall:

Distribution Date: February 2008

Description: “5”-6” long black metal canister with a black metal lid, a wick and a wick cap made of either dark metal or wood. The canister is wrapped with red bamboo.”

• Model Number: A26I0037

UPC Number: 1249597837

Distribution Date: April 2008 through March 2009

Description: “5”-6” long black metal canister with a black metal lid, a wick and a wick cap made of either dark metal or wood. The canister is wrapped with red bamboo.”

• Model Number: A26I0943

UPC Number: 639277779885

Distribution Date: February 2009

Description: “5”-6” long black canister with a black metal lid, a wick and no wick cap. The product is sold in packages of 2. The canister is wrapped with light beige and dark brown intertwined bamboo.”

The recalled bamboo torches were made available for purchase at CVS/Pharmacy, Rite Aid, and Dollar Tree/Deals$ stores between February 2009 and March 2015. Prices ranged from $3 to $5.

Consumers have been urged to cease use of the bamboo torches to prevent future laceration risks and contact Atico International USA to learn how to receive a full reimbursement.
