Boston, MA – Two neighbors who ran through a burning building to wake up residents during an early morning fire in a Beacon Hill apartment complex on Wednesday, July 13, 2010, are being hailed as heroes responsible for the safety of many people, as reported by The Boston Herald.

The fire reportedly started on the second floor of the building at 5 a.m, sending residents out to the street in their pajamas.

Christina Schmidt, a resident of the 10-unit building that went into flames, told reporters, “I’m so grateful for that man and his neighbor,” explaining that their alert helped get her and her dog to safety.

Schmidt said a man and woman who live next door spotted flames coming from the building and ran inside to bang on doors and yell warnings.

Boston fire officials reported one man had to jump out of a window in order to escape the flames and another woman was pulled out of the smoke and flames in a second-floor unit. Both victims suffered serious injuries.

They were transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, according to fire spokesman Steve MacDonald. The woman suffered extensive burns and police found the man who jumped.

A firefighter was also sent to the hospital for an eye injury from a burning ember.

The Red Cross arrived at the scene to aid those who were displaced.

Fire officials reported the blaze caused approximately $250,000 in damage. MacDonald reported the fire alarms did work, but added that the two good Samaritans helped people realize danger was present.

An investigation into the source of the blaze is underway.
