Los Angeles, CA—A “Free Swim Day” at a public pool in Arcadia took a turn for the worse when seventeen people, including 10 children became sick and were rushed to a hospital. Officials suspect an overload of chlorine is the culprit for the mass infliction, as reported by KTLA.

Emergency crews were called to the public pool at the Arcadia County Park around 11:20 a.m. on Monday, July 19, 2010, where they transported 17 people to Methodist Hospital in Arcadia and Huntington Hospital in Pasadena for treatment.

The swimmers complained of trouble breathing, eye pain and nausea.

Officials say the respiratory problems were likely caused by a sensor inside the pool, which accidentally released large amounts of chlorine into the pool.

Dozens of other swimmers, including at least 30 children, were evacuated from the Norman Johnson Aquatic Center located on Santa Anita Avenue as a safety precaution.

County parks and recreation are planning to conduct a full investigation into the incident. It is unknown when the pool will reopen for use.
