Salt Lake City, UT—A malfunction during a fireworks display injured at least 10 people when mortars shot into a large crowd of people who gathered together for Pioneer Day. It was mass chaos on Saturday, July 24, 2010 at Liberty Park, located at 1300 South and 500 East, when people ran for cover from the out-of-control fireworks, reported KSTU.

Officials with the Salt Lake City Fire Department stated that the malfunction caused a Roman Candle to explode inside its tube, causing several other fireworks to fall over and discharge. Department spokesman Scott Freitag stated, “Anywhere form eight to 10 mortars then shot into the crowd in multiple directions.”

Emergency crews treated 10 people for minor injuries and burns at the scene.

Witness and victim Bryan Demos said, “Everyone was running in mass hysteria and that when I got trampled, someone stepped on my ankle.” Demos ultimately suffered a broken ankle and a burn to his arm.

Lantis Fireworks, the company that ran the show, claimed it was a freak accident. The fire department is investigating the firework mishap.
