London – A breath test may soon aid in the detection of common cancers. As reported by Reuters, Israeli scientists are developing a technology that shows promise in detecting lung, bowel, breast, and prostate cancers using an “electronic nose.”

Abraham Kuten of Technion Israel Institute of Technology is quoted by Reuters as stating of the implications of recent research findings, “If we can confirm these initial results in large-scale studies, this new technology could become a simple tool for early diagnosis of cancer along with imaging.”

Kuten and fellow researchers found after testing the breath of a combination of healthy participants and others with cancer that distinctions could be made between healthy and malignant breath.

More information about the study may be available in the British Journal of Cancer.
