…and How It Led the Way for the 2009 Demonstrations against the Islamic Republic of Iran
San Francisco, CA – August 17, 2010 — Never before told from an insider’s perspective, Reza Mohajerinejad’s new book, Live Generation, is the story of the courageous students who, in 1999, dared to stand up to a tyrannical regime. Following a brutal attack on the Tehran University dormitories in which government militia attacked and killed students in the middle of the night, students rose up in protest. What started within the campus walls soon spread to universities all over Iran. Some 50,000 students demonstrated in the streets of Tehran until authorities began hunting them down and arresting them en masse.
Mohajerinejad was a student leader and one of the organizers of those protests. Live Generation follows the author through his attempt to flee the country before his eventual capture, imprisonment, torture, and ultimate escape from Iran. The book provides historical context around the politics that led up to the 1999 student movement, as well as a detailed analysis of the current state of the plight of the Iranian people. The events of July 1999 are considered the beginnings of a new generation of Iranian youth who are willing to risk it all for secular democracy in Iran.
This first-person narrative is inspiring in its demonstration of the author’s unflinching determination to survive the harsh reality of torture as a political prisoner in Iran. His view into modern day Middle East politics provides invaluable insight into what it will take for the youth of today to see a new day in Iran.
