U.S. – A new report says cancer is the most costly disease in the world. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the American Cancer Society is set to present information on the economic costs of chronic diseases at an upcoming global cancer conference in China.
As noted by the AP, the report says the economic toll of cancer in 2008 was $895 billion, which is equal to 1.5 percent of the global gross domestic product. Factors for determining the costs were based on disability and loss of life as opposed to treatment costs.
Dr. Andreas Ullrich, medical officer for cancer control at WHO is quoted in the report as stating of the push for an increase in initiatives that focus on non-infectious causes of death, “This needs to be discussed at the UN — how we are going to deal with this” rising burden of chronic disease.”
