Portland, OR– Half-dozen products from Umpqua Dairy have been recalled, and operations have been suspended after 23 people in Oregon have become sickened. Umpqua Dairy, a Roseburg, Ore.-based company, recalled its milk, half and half, cream, buttermilk, orange juice and fruit drinks, as reported by KATU.

The recalled products sold under the brand names of Cascade, Great Value, Lady Lee, Market of Choice and Sherm’s. Umpqua Dairy also supplied milk to Dairy Queen eateries in Oregon and Washington.

Ice cream and other dairy products made by Umpqua Dairy, including sour cream and cottage cheese, are not involved in the recall.

The recalled products should be thrown away or returned. The products have a plant code of 41-62 stamped on them, and have been purchased before Aug. 16 and have an expiration date of Sept. 5 or earlier.

Those who have become sickened because of the products have tested positive for Salmonella Braenderup. Two people have been hospitalized as a result, but no deaths were reported.

The Oregon Department of Agriculture is reviewing Umpqua Dairy’s processing systems to determine the problem. The issue originally began in October 2009, and investigators have been tracing the Salmonella since the first case was reported.

Paul Cieslak, M.D., of the Oregon Public Health Division stated, “This outbreak has unfolded slowly and it was just recently that we were able to confirm the matching Salmonella strain in the Umpqua milk plant. We want to tell consumers that if they have any Umpqua milk at home, they should discard it or ask for a refund from the store where it was purchased.”

Any retailers or wholesalers who have any of the recalled products should call 888-672-MILK (6455) or visit Umpqua’s website.
