Iron Ridge, WI—An inexplicable dog attack Wednesday, August 25, 2010 claimed the life of a 4-year-old Hustisford girl. The child was reportedly attacked when she was left unattended in the backyard of a Hubbard Township home near Iron Ridge, as reported by WISN.

According to Dodge County Sheriff Todd Nehls, Taylor Bells and her family were visiting the home, which she had never been to before, Wednesday afternoon. At some point, the young child was left in a backyard of the residence.

While Bells was reportedly unsupervised at the time, she was not alone. A 5-year-old Boxer, who was attached to a leash and chain that was long enough for him to roam the stretch of the yard, accompanied her.

“You’ll never be able to answer why the dog reacted or what he did,” said Nehls. The dog mauled the girl until a neighbor noticed the horrific commotion.

The unidentified neighbor ran to the front door of the residency and told the family to call 911. A dispatcher told the family how to perform CPR on the severely injured kid for about nine minutes.

When emergency medical services (EMS) crews arrived at the scene, they rushed the child to Beaver Dam Community Hospital. While medical personnel tried to save Bells for nearly an hour, her traumatic injuries proved fatal at the hospital.

Nehls reported the dog was transported to the Dodge County Humane Society after the brutal attack. He was to be quarantined for 10 days. After that period of time has passed, his owner will apparently decide whether the dog will be euthanized or not.

Officials from the Dodge County Sheriff’s Department and Dodge County Medical Examiner’s Office are probing the Wisconsin child’s death.

Reports did not specify why the child was left alone with the dog when the attack occurred.
