Chicago – A new study shows preventative surgery may significantly reduce the risks of developing certain types of cancers in women with a genetic risk for them. As reported by The Washington Times, researchers found that women with inherited mutations of the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes may reduce their risks of ovarian and breast cancers with removal of their breasts, ovaries, and fallopian tubes.
Cara Tenenbaum, vice president of policy and external affairs for the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance, is quoted in the report as stating of genetic testing, “It is important that a woman consult a genetic counselor if she has a family history of breast cancer or ovarian cancer so that she can consider genetic testing.”
