Toledo, OH– An explosion at a Northwood automotive supply plant injured nine workers on Tuesday, September 7, 2010. The blast occurred on a pre-assembly line around 7:15 at Faurecia Interior Systems Inc., located at 6307 Fairfield Drive, as reported by the Toledo Blade.
A hydraulic line reportedly malfunctioned, causing the explosion on the pre-assembly line.
One Faurecia employee, Natalie Humphrey stated, “I was standing right next to [the pre-assembly line] when I heard a loud explosion that sounded like a cannon…and then I saw two people lying on the ground and black smoke everywhere.”
Northwood crews rushed to the scene and transported nine workers to the hospital. Seven of the workers were treated and released by noon. Two of the injured workers were taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
The workers reportedly suffered from smoke inhalation, with some sustaining possible ear damage as well. All of the workers were conscious following the blast, but some did appeared to be disoriented.
Officials with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are investigating the explosion.
