The GOD’S CHILD Project has built 81 houses this year. Already exceeding a year-end goal of 80 houses, The GOD’S CHILD Project estimates that it will finish almost 90 houses by year’s end.
ANTIGUA, Guatemala – As the dust settles on another hectic summer at The GOD’S CHILD Project’s Guatemalan head quarters on the outskirts of Antigua, the service team department is pleased to announce record-breaking numbers for both number of houses built and volunteers participating.
To date, The GOD’S CHILD Project has built 81 houses this year. Already exceeding a year-end goal of 80 houses, The GOD’S CHILD Project estimates that it will finish almost 90 houses by year’s end. This was accomplished by the hard work of 28 service teams from all over the United States. Ranging in age from children to senior citizens, hundreds of volunteers visited The GOD’S CHILD Project this summer to build dignifying homes and work in some of The GOD’S CHILD Project’s 12 programs. From caring for infants at Casa Jackson Malnutrition Center to distributing meals at Antigua’s only homeless shelter, volunteers spent an average of 10 days each donating their time, sweat and money.
“Our organization simply would not function without the ongoing support of thousands past, present and future volunteers,” Founder and Executive Director Patrick Atkinson said. “Volunteers visited in record numbers this summer, allowing The GOD’S CHILD Project to extend an unprecedented amount of support to the Guatemalan people.”
From humble beginnings nearly two decades ago when Atkinson founded a program for war orphans in Antigua, The GOD’S CHILD Project has grown into one of Guatemala’s largest and most well-respected nonprofit organizations and has expanded into the United States and four other countries.
“Service team members are on the front lines assisting the poorest of the poor; giving people without a place to live a safe and dignified home,” Atkinson said.
Approximately 2,000 homes have been built for the poorest families of Guatemala in that time, giving families a secure and dignified base on which to break the vicious poverty cycle that effects over 75% of the population.
“Year after year, service teams come to Guatemala in larger numbers, building more homes and touching more lives,” Service Team Coordinator Victor Garrido said. “And yet, every year we have more and more families asking for help to break out of poverty. This summer, we changed the future for over 80 deserving families. Next summer, we hope to do even more.”
