Sen. Coburn prefers money over food safety
Sep. 15, 2010 — Why does Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) want Americans to eat unsafe food? Because it costs money. Money, these days, means much more than safety.
Coburn’s staff confirmed to Politico that the senator is blocking food safety legislation from leaving the Heath, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee because, as his spokesman told Politico, “We can’t afford to spend money we don’t have any longer.”
Yet, everyday people can afford to eat food that sickens at least 1 in 4 Americans, 75 million people, every year.
