Washington, D.C.—A traffic crash in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Northwest Washington, D.C. left two female pedestrians with serious injuries. The accident, which also involved a restaurant, occurred around 8:45 p.m. on Wednesday, September 8, 2010, according to information provided by the Washington Post.
Reports indicated a four-door sedan struck two women walking along the 1700 block of Florida Avenue NW. After hitting the pedestrians, the car reportedly went on to crash into an Eritrean restaurant, Keren Coffee Shop. The café is located at 1780 Florida Ave., in close proximity to 18th Street and U Street NW.
Personnel from the D.C. fire and EMS department responded to the scene and subsequently rushed the injured pedestrians to area hospitals. One woman’s injuries were described as life threatening, while the other was apparently listed in serious condition.
The victims’ identities have not yet been released. Reports did not disclose whether the driver of the car involved, who also remained unidentified, suffered any injuries. Additionally, it was unknown if the motorist was ticketed in connection with the pedestrian-involved traffic accident.
According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Board’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) Encyclopedia, 4,378 pedestrians were killed in the United States during the year 2008. Of those pedestrian fatalities, 490 occurred in Florida.
Investigations into this particular D.C. accident are expected to be underway.
