Kelly Falardeau was the winner of the People’s Choice Award at the Fashion Has No Borders Every Woman Model Search competition in Calgary, but her story is not that of your typical beauty queen. Against all odds Falardeau made it into the Top 10 from among 1,500 contestants across Alberta.
An accident when she was two caused Falardeau to suffer burns on 75 per cent of her body. She had to undergo years of painful surgeries to treat the burns and she was teased mercilessly as a kid.
“I entered into this competition to prove to myself and all other women that beauty comes from the inside,” said Falardeau. “As a burn survivor, I’m never going to be your typical image of beauty. What I want to share with others through this competition is that real beauty comes from loving yourself just as you are, being courageous and having an inner confidence that radiates out.”
It took a lot of courage for Falardeau, who had spent all her life avoiding the spotlight, to walk the plank/catwalk in front of hundreds of people. Her winning the People’s Choice Award is an indication that her message of true beauty has touched the people.
Falardeau’s life story is an inspiration to all women, especially those who struggle in meeting the “beauty ideal.” Growing up amidst whispers, stares and rejection, Falardeau learned quickly the meaning of “pulling yourself up by the boot straps and creating your own reality.”
Falardeau will be a motivational speaker at the World Burn Congress in Texas this October 20-23, 2010 on two different topics, ‘Journaling/Blogging for Fun and Soul’ and ‘Sexuality and Intimacy.’ She will also be making a pitstop in Salt Lake City to speak about “Can’t vs Can” and the “Beauty from Within” on Oct 18 & 19, 2010.
When Falardeau spoke at the Aboriginal Women Empowering Women Conference, women were saying how awesome, engaging and powerful Falardeau’s message was. They found her “beauty exercise” to be a tremendous benefit in helping them to find their true beauty.
