Canada – A new study shows that the survival rates for poor people following a cancer diagnosis are lower than those for wealthy individuals. As reported by Postmedia News, Canadian researchers found considerable differences in survival rates for lower-income patients than those with higher-income.

Dr. Christopher Booth, one of the authors of the research report, is quoted by Postmedia News as stating of the stage of cancer at the time of diagnosis as a proposed factor in the differences in survival rates, “We observed only very small differences in the stage of disease at diagnosis across socioeconomic groups and these differences did not account for the differences in survival… That was a bit surprising and it also contrasts with what they found in most of the studies in the United States.”

More information about the study may be available in the Cancer journal of the American Cancer Society.
