San Francisco – New research suggests poverty and other factors have an effect on after care for cancer patients. As reported by HealthDay News, patients without private health insurance, African Americans, and poor individuals are more negatively impacted in terms of diagnosis, treatment, and survival when they develop cancer.

One study on colon cancer diagnoses of patients from poor areas showed a 15 percent higher incidence of advanced stages of the disease than in richer communities. Lead researcher Dr. Chyke Doubeni, an assistant professor of family medicine and community health at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, is quoted by HealthDay News as stating of the implications of the findings, “We need to understand more about the health care utilization patterns of patients in poorer neighborhoods and obstacles to colorectal cancer screening in those neighborhoods.”

Three studies regarding the factors were recently presented at an American Association for Cancer Research meeting in Miami.
