Fredonia, NY—A fun, homecoming tradition for one high school resulted in an accident that injured five students. A hayride wagon reportedly tipped over on Wednesday, September 29, 2010, when a group of girls all moved to one side of the wagon to avoid being hit by water balloons, as reported by TMJ.
According to parents, every year before the powder puff football game, the junior’s ride either in a hay wagon or on a trailer, as the seniors throw ketchup, powdered sugar, water balloons and other objects at them as they pass by.
When the Ozaukee High School seniors began to throw the objects, the girls in the wagon all moved to one side to avoid being struck by the water balloons and other objects. Because of the weight, the trailer tipped over and trapped some of the teens underneath.
Megan Janke, one of the girls on the wagon stated, “Everyone was screaming and trying to get out, and started lifting it back up and everyone was still in the wagon, so people were just jumping all over the place.”
One girl’s leg was trapped underneath the overturned wagon. Another girl, Aman Gill, suffered a bruised hip and strained her neck.
Officials reported that the injuries were limited to banged-up legs, ankles and hips. The injuries were not life-threatening. Five people were taken to an area hospital for treatment. Three of the five victims were expected to be at school the next day.
