Washington – A new study suggests dying at home may be better for terminal cancer patients than living out their remaining time in a hospital or intensive care unit. As reported by Reuters, researchers found that patients with at home hospice care died more peacefully, and there were emotional benefits for caregivers as well.

Dr. Alexi Wright of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and colleagues are quoted as writing of their findings, “Patients with cancer who died in an intensive care unit or hospital experienced more physical and emotional distress and worse quality of life at the end of life…Although most patients with cancer prefer to die at home, 36 percent die in a hospital and 8 percent die in an intensive care unit (ICU).”

More information about the research may be available in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
