Fayetteville, TN—A 2-year-old girl was airlifted to a Nashville hospital after her young brother accidentally shot her in the head while playing with a bow and arrow set he received as a birthday gift. The injurious incident occurred at a Fayetteville home during the boy’s 6th birthday party Saturday, October 9, 2010, as reported by WSMV.com.
According to parents Wesley and Susan Shelton, family and friends gathered to celebrate their son Will’s 6th birthday when something went terribly wrong.
Will was reportedly using a bow and arrow set his parents gave him as a birthday gift when he mistakenly shot his sister, Sara in the head. The arrow tip got stuck inside the child’s brain, just above her left ear and near her brain stem.
The Sheltons alleged the accident occurred when they turned their attention away from him momentarily. “Never turn your back on a kid. It took a second. He’s only 6. He doesn’t realize the danger,” stated Wesley Shelton.
Sara was subsequently flown to Vanderbilt Medical Center via Lifeflight helicopter. Doctors were then forced to decide whether they would surgically remove the arrow, which was lodged in her brain, or remove it during a CT scan.
Hospital personnel decided against operating on the tot and proceeded to carefully extract the arrow while looking at a CT scan. Luckily, their method of removing the arrow proved successful. By Thursday, young Sara was playing blissfully in the park with the other kids.
Doctors did not seem to believe Sara would suffer from any long-term brain injuries in connection with the incident.
