Long Beach, CA—A helicopter crash at Long Beach Airport (LGB) left a student pilot and flight instructor injured. The helicopter accident occurred as the pair were practicing landings around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 12, 2010, according to information provided by the PressTelegram.com.
Reports indicated a two-seater Robinson R-22 helicopter, occupied by a student and his instructor, was practicing hovering maneuvers at Long Beach Airport’s helipad #3 when the aircraft’s right skid made contact with the ground.
According to Ian Gregor, spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration’s Western-Pacific Region, the helicopter subsequently flipped over, coming to a rest in a grassy area.
While responding Long Beach Fire Department firefighters had to contain a minor fuel leak upon their arrival, no fire was reported in connection with the helicopter accident.
The student, merely identified as a male in his 20s, suffered moderate leg and shoulder injuries in the helicopter crash. Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel rushed him to Long Beach Memorial Medical Center for treatment.
The unidentified 24-year-old male flight instructor suffered minor injuries in the aviation accident. He was transported to an area hospital to be treated for his injuries as well.
FAA officials are expected to probe the helicopter accident.
