U.S. – A new study shows many patients with terminal cancers continue to receive cancer screenings regardless of whether they would likely benefit from the tests. As reported by HealthDay News, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City researchers found that many patients with advanced cancers of the lung, colon, pancreas, breast, and gastroesophageal cancer are routinely exposed to risks associated with additional testing that is not likely to prove beneficial for them.

Lead researcher Dr. Camelia S. Sima, is quoted in the report as stating of the findings, “For patients living with advanced cancer, cancer screening should not be a routine procedure… Patients living with advanced malignancies and their doctors should engage in a realistic conversation about the risks and benefits associated with cancer screening in [the] face of a severely limited life expectancy.”

More information about the research may be available in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
