Columbus, OH—A teenager walked into his family’s Martin home Sunday, October 31, 2010, only to be greeted with the horrific sight of his slain brother, mother, and stepfather. While the 16-year-old boy told authorities he initially believed it was Halloween hoax, he quickly and sadly realized otherwise, according to information provided by the Associated Press.
Devon Griffin returned to his home in northwest Ohio Sunday morning, after spending the night at a friend’s house. Though he merely intended to change his clothes before Sunday mass, he found himself facing a tragedy.
Griffin discovered the bodies of his brother, 23-year-old Derek Griffin; their mother, Susan Liske; and her husband, William Liske, inside Ottawa County home, covered in blood.
Upon realizing that the site was no Halloween prank, he ran outside and called his aunt, who subsequently contacted authorities. “My nephew came home and there’s blood everywhere,” Griffin’s aunt told dispatchers.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff Bob Bratton, the victims suffered severe head trauma, though it was not yet known whether a gunshot or blunt object was responsible for their fatal injuries.
Griffin’s 24-year-old stepbrother, also named William Liske, was arrested in connection with the murders. Liske, who reportedly has a history of psychiatric issues, faced charges of assault and robbery in 2004. He was also accused of stealing his stepmother’s car keys and hitting her with a coffee cup.
Nevertheless, those charges were dropped after a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity was filed on his behalf. Liske lived in a halfway house but was taken into custody when officials found him at his family’s cabin, located 170 miles away from Martin.
A full investigation is expected to be underway.
