Greenwich, CT—A man was crushed to death when a concrete slab fell on him while he was in a trench, leaving only his hand visible to rescue teams. The fatal construction accident occurred at a home, located at 2 MacPherson Drive at around 3 p.m., as reported by the Greenwich Time.
According to officials, the construction workers had dug a 7-foot trench to do utility work, when the concrete slab underneath the front door of the home gave way, trapping a construction worker underneath. Apparently the home has been unoccupied for some time, and was currently undergoing major renovations.
When emergency crews arrived they only found the trapped man’s hand from underneath the concrete. The worker did not have a pulse when rescuers arrived.
Another worker was also injured during the collapse. He reportedly sustained minor injuries and was transported to the Greenwich Hospital for treatment.
Rescue teams were expected to work through the night in order to retrieve the man’s body. Officials have not released the victim’s identity, but he is said to be under 30-years-old.
The fire department’s Trench Rescue Team and South Beach Firehouse Trench Rescue volunteers responded to the scene.
Occupational Safety and Health officials and the Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner are conducting investigations.
