San Mateo, CA (Bay Area Workplace Injury Lawyer News)—Officials from the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) are expected to conduct a full investigation into an unfortunate on-the-job accident that claimed the life of a construction worker. The victim, a Sacramento man, was reportedly working outside a building that was under renovation when he fell to his death Friday, October 8, 2010, as reported by the Mercury News. Of 301 fatal occupational injuries reported throughout the state of California in 2009, 50 occurred within the construction industry, according to OSHA statistics. Data also indicated 54 of those casualties occurred as a result of fatal falls.

Reports stated a construction worker who was hired to install metal studs in the frames of buildings was standing on a beam when he fell approximately 15 feet to the ground below. The 10 a.m. incident sadly caused 23-year-old Cristobal Reyes-Segura to suffer fatal injuries. Reports did not specify whether he was initially rushed to a hospital or pronounced dead at the scene. The fatal construction accident occurred outside the Woodlake Shopping Center, located along the 800 block of North Delaware Street. According to Brett Mykrantz, a manager at SD Deacon Corp., the general contractor on the remodeling job, this was the first deadly accident to occur within the construction company. “Our goal is to assist our subcontractor’s family and crew during this difficult time,” said Mykrantz. Cal/OSHA’s probe is expected to take two to three months to complete.
