Washington – CT scans are said to be linked to a decrease in lung cancer death rates. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), researchers found in a study of heavy smokers that there was a 20 percent decline in death from the disease among individuals given spiral CT scans.
National Cancer Institute Director Dr. Harold Varmus is quoted by the AP as stating of the findings, “This finding has important implications for public health, with the potential to save many lives among those at greatest risk for lung cancer” however, “we don’t know the ideal way yet to do this screening,” due to associated risks.
Varmus released the study results on Thursday; however full data is set to be published in the coming months.
