Newton County, GA—Police officials were dispatched to a Newton County home Wednesday, November 3, 2010, after a mother called to report that her 9-month-old daughter had been attacked by a couple of raccoons. Authorities from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office stated the brutal attack, which occurred inside the home, left the baby with severe bites to her head and body, according to information provided by WSBTV.
Reports indicated two raccoons managed to find their way into a home along Brook Hollow way before 4:30 a.m. They then apparently slipped into the crib of a 9-month-old girl, biting and attacking her as she slept.
The injured girl’s mother contacted authorities around 4:30 a.m. When deputies arrived at the home, they reportedly found two raccoons outside the home.
A police officer fatally shot one of the raccoons after it apparently became aggressive. Animal control personnel captured the second, which was expected to undergo rabies testing.
Emergency medical services (EMS) teams reportedly rushed the injured baby to Egleston-based Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to be treated for the serious injuries she suffered in the raccoon attack. The young girl was listed in critical condition at the hospital.
Officials are expected to investigate how the animals might have made their way into the house. They are allegedly looking into whether the animals snuck in via the air conditioning unit or if the family was giving the raccoons food prior to the attack.
