San Antonio, TX—The Texas Department of State Health Services has confirmed the listeria outbreak that led to four deaths is connected to a Texas food processing plant, which was shut down on Oct. 20. The listeria bacterium was found in multiple locations at the SanGar Produce & Processing Co. plant, as reported by USA Today.
As previously reported in, “Texas Sangar Fresh Cut Produce Factory Closed Over Suspected Listeria Deaths,” Listeriosis has reportedly been the cause of at least five deaths and five illnesses in the state of Texas during the last eight months.
The plant was ordered by state officials to cease operations and recall every product that has been shipped out of the plant since January. The listeria was believed to have come from the plant’s chopped celery.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released the results on Wednesday, November 3, 2010, which showed that the test matched the ones conducted at the San Antonio plant.
Listeria monocytogenes infections can cause fever, muscle aches, diarrhea and vomiting; posing the most danger in seniors, pregnant women, newborns and people with weakened immune systems.
