El Paso County, CO– At least 11 people were injured Tuesday night November 9, 2010, when a school bus lost control on an icy highway and rolled over into a ditch. The school bus accident occurred on U.S. Highway 24, just east of Peyton at 9:30 p.m., as reported by KDVR.
The Colorado State Patrol reported that the school bus was traveling eastbound on Highway 24, when the bus driver slowed for another vehicle. In doing so, the bus driver lost control on the icy and slick roadway, causing the bus to spin counterclockwise, slide down an embankment and overturn on its right side.
The school bus was transporting 24 students and five adults back to Calhan Middle School after they played basketball games in Colorado Springs.
Responding ambulances transported 10 victims to area hospital for treatment of mild to moderate injuries. One adult, a 31-year-old male, was airlifted to a hospital for treatment of an arm injury. Emergency workers described most of the injuries as bangs, bruises, scrapes and minor cuts. State Patrol Capt. Chuck Cargin said none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening and the passengers were able to walk away from the bus.
The school bus driver, a 65-year-old Simla man, was uninjured in the wreck.
By the time emergency crews arrived, most of the students managed to escape out the back emergency exit of the bus.
A full investigation into the school bus accident is underway.
