New Zealand – A doctor’s competency is in question after the alleged misdiagnosis of a woman dying of bowel cancer. As reported by the Waikato Times, Health and Disability Commissioner Anthony Hill has requested a competency review by the Medical Council of Hamilton GP Suresh Vatsyayann, who purportedly diagnosed the 66 year-old woman with anemia, without conducting tests to determine the cause of the condition.
Hill is quoted in the report as stating of the matter, “This was yet another case where patient safety was compromised through failing to get the basics right… If appropriate investigations into the cause of Ms B’s iron deficiency had been carried out by Dr A, her cancer could have been diagnosed earlier.”
As noted in the report, a determination has not yet been made by the commission.
