Butler County, PA—Four people lost their lives in a tragic Cherry Township two-vehicle crash Tuesday morning, November 23, 2010. The deadly head-on collision, which occurred in close proximity to Moniteau High School, killed both drivers and two Amish passengers, according to information provided by the Pittsburgh Channel.

Reports indicated Louis Sweetapple, 76, was driving a group of six Amish people to a funeral in Punxsutawney, when the van he was operating veered over the centerline of Route 308. The van subsequently slammed head-on into a pickup truck, which was being driven by 30-year-old Charles Roxberry.

Roxberry and Sweetapple, who had no affiliation with the Amish group, suffered fatal injuries in the motor vehicle collision. Two of the Amish passengers, whom authorities identified as 72-year-old Fanny Detweiler and 77-year-old Eli Coblentz, were also killed in the wreck.

Four other passengers suffered injuries, but luckily managed to survive the van crash. The victims were identified as 62-year-old Benedict Hostettler and 72-year-old Irvine Detweiler, who each suffered a “major injury,” as well as 46-year-old David Coblentz and 34-year-old Cynda Detweiler, who each suffered “moderate” injuries.

The survivors were airlifted from the scene, located south of Keister Road, to Pittsburgh hospitals via medical helicopter.

A full investigation into the four-fatality Cherry Twp. crash was expected to be underway.
