Palm Beach County, FL—Three separate helicopter crashes were reported throughout western Palm Beach County, Fla. Early Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010. According to information provided by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the pilots of all three helicopters were attempting to keep frost from damaging vegetable crops at the time.
At approximately 2:10 a.m., a Robinson R-44 helicopter was flying over a vegetable field near Lake Okeechobee when it went down for unknown reasons. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) authorities said the aircraft was heavily damaged, although its unidentified pilot escaped serious injury.
Around 6:15 a.m., a second Robinson R-44 helicopter crashed after its tail fell off and struck a post at the Pahokee-based Palm Beach County Glades Airport. There were two people in the helicopter at the time. They did not suffer any injuries.
Fire-rescue officials said the pilot of a third helicopter was airlifted to an area hospital in serious condition after he too became involved in an aviation accident.
The unidentified pilot was flying over a Pahokee cornfield in an attempt to circulate the air and keep frost from damaging the crops when his helicopter went down.
FAA officials are expected to investigate what might have caused the three Palm Beach County helicopter crashes.
