Chicago, IL—A collision between a school bus and sport utility vehicle on Chicago’s South Side Wednesday morning, Dec. 15, 2010 sent five students to area hospitals. The accident happened in the southbound lanes of the Bishop Ford Freeway around 7:45 a.m., as reported by My Fox Chicago.
According to an Illinois State Police District Chicago trooper, a school bus was traveling in the left lane of the Bishop Ford, in close proximity to 103rd Street, when the driver lost control for unknown reasons. Upon doing so, the bus slammed into an SUV.
There were 30 children aboard the school bus at the time, five of whom emergency medical services (EMS) personnel transported to Trinity, Roseland and Little Company of Mary hospitals for evaluation. One of the students, a 13-year-old girl, reportedly sustained cuts on her head in the bus wreck.
The unidentified state trooper said southbound Bishop Ford Freeway had to be closed for a short period of time after the wreck, since several lanes were blocked as a result of the school bus accident.
It did not appear as if any citations had been issued as of yet. Investigations into the South Side school bus-SUV collision are expected to be underway.
