Chicago, IL—Two firefighters were killed when a roof collapsed while battling a blaze at an abandoned building on Chicago’s South Side. The fatal fire ironically occurred on the 100th anniversary of another fatal fire that claimed the lives of 21 Chicago firefighters, when a wall collapsed at the Union Stock Yards, marking one of the nation’s worst tragedies involving firefighters before 9/11, as reported by MSNBC.
Over 170 firefighters responded to the burning building on East 75th near Stony Island on Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at around 6:54 a.m.
Although the building was abandoned for years, firefighters rushed into the building to search for any homeless people, who may have been squatting inside.
While battling the fire a heavy-timbered roof and a wall suddenly collapsed, and trapped four firefighters underneath. Fellow firefighters dug two of the men out, and used extraction equipment to save the other two.
Two firefighters were killed, and 17 others were injured in the fire. The injured were rushed to local hospitals for treatment of injuries ranging from minor to serious.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but authorities speculate that squatters may have been burning debris to stay warm when the building caught fire.
