Fans of the hit TV series “Glee” will be seeing and hearing their favorite stars performing in front of new custom-sewn drapes created by theatrical drapery manufacturer Sew What? Inc. The new stage drape, a massive “brick” velour, debuted in the recent “Special Education” episode as the club competed at Sectionals.
The richness and soft texture of the velour drape presented a lush classical backdrop as the Glee performers danced and sang in the foreground.
According to Sew What? Inc. president Megan Duckett, the challenge involved delivering a large amount of yardage in a short period of time, while carefully considering many different fabric weights and colors to arrive at the perfect show piece.
“It was important to the producers that this drape could be used during the course of the Glee season, meaning it had to be integral to the spirit of this hugely successful series,” said Ms. Duckett.
In addition, Sew What? provided a complete theatrical drapery package including masking drapes, cyclorama and scrim set. “Glee is all about production,” added Ms. Duckett. “They’re a full-out premier production company with a top-rated show, and they’re not about cutting any corners. Our stock-in-trade is working with A-list performers who need drapery suppliers who can step up to any challenges, so we felt fully up to the task.”
This isn’t the first time the producers of Glee have taken advantage of the fabrication talents of Sew What?. In their 2010 live tour, actors performed in front of large digitally printed fabric replicas of 1950’s guitar amplifiers created by Sew What?.
The producers also called on the capabilities of its sister company Rent What? Inc. for a variety of drape rentals, both for the series as well as the live tour. In the “Special Education” episode, performers sang in front of a stunning silver Austrian drape from the Silver Satin Drapery Series, notable for the way the fabrics’ folds catch and reflect stage lighting.
