Chicago, IL—Six-thousand pounds of marble slabs crushed a 23-year-old Chicago man to death at a Romeoville stone supplier on December 30, 2010. The man was reportedly helping to unload the slabs when the accident occurred around 9 a.m., at the Primus Natural Stone Facility in the 1200 block of Naperville Dr., as reported by The Chicago Breaking News Center.
The Romeoville Fire Department reported that Emilio Gallardo was inside a shipping container helping a forklift operator unload a bundle of marble slabs weighing 700 to 1,000 pounds each, when the load of marble somehow fell on him.
Officials believe Gallardo was killed instantly in the workplace accident.
A forklift operator from a nearby business worked at the scene for over three hours to free Gallardo’s body. At the time of the accident, the victim and the forklift operator were the only employees in the building.
Gallardo had only been a laborer at Primus for three months.
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) investigators are expected to arrive at the scene and conduct a full investigation into the fatal workplace accident.
