Winston-Salem, NC– A construction worker was killed while making repairs at Salem Lake in Winston-Salem on Wednesday, January 5, 2011. The fatal construction accident occurred just after 10 a.m., as two men were in a manhole replacing valves, as reported by WXII12.
Jim Armentrout of Jade Ramey Construction LLC reported, two workers were replacing valves to the raw-water pipeline between Salem Lake and the Thomas Water Treatment Plant, when they were overcome by gas fumes while inside the manhole. The men were reportedly in the hole for 15 minutes when they were exposed to the gas fumes.
A third worker attempted to help the incapacitated workers, but he too became overwhelmed by the fumes.
The men reportedly work for J. Ramey Construction LLC.
Responding emergency crews rushed the victims to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center where one of the workers, identified as Herman Wilson, 62, later died. The conditions of the other workers was not reported.
OSHA is investigating the accident.
