New Bedford, MA—A man lost his leg after he was struck by a passing vehicle in New Bedford. The automobile accident occurred on Route 18 on Wednesday, January 19, 2011, just before 9:30 p.m. as the victim was pushing his 2000 Dodge Caravan, which ran out of gas, as reported by Boston.com.
State Police reported that the victim, a 32-year-old man, was pushing his vehicle when he was hit by 2006 Nissan Altima driven by Tania Pinto, 25, of Dartmouth.
The man’s leg was severed in the collision. An unidentified female placed a tourniquet on the man to stop blood loss until emergency crews arrived. Responding emergency crews rushed the victim to St Lukes Hospital in New Bedford, where he will be transferred to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence for further treatment.
Pinto was also injured, and was transported to St Lukes as well.
The crash is under investigation. No charges have been filed at this time.
