Sheridan, OR—A 44-year-old Albany man was killed when he fell off a small wooden bridge while operating a large logging shovel on Wednesday, January 20, 2011. The work-related accident occurred about seven miles up the Mill Creek Mainline near Sheridan, on Weyerhauser-owned property around 4:30 a.m., as reported by OregonLive.com.
Polk County Sheriff’s officials reported that Dan Fults of Albany was trying to cross the small wooden bridge, when the tracked logging shovel fell off the bridge, causing it to overturn and land upside down in the creek.
Fults was killed in the accident.
An investigating into the accident and the exact cause is underway.
The logging shovel is owned by Rice Logging in Sweet Home.
Shovel logging “uses a log loader to swing logs to the forest road. Rather than driving out to the log and dragging it back to the landing, the loader moves slowly across the harvest area, grabbing logs within reach, and swinging them around to drop them closer to the road,” according to the Astoria-based J.M. Browning Company’s website.
