Joliet, IL—A toddler wandered away from his family and fell nearly 30-feet down an elevator shaft at a Joliet hotel on Sunday, January 23, 2011. The accident occurred after 3:30 p.m. at the Hotel Plaza located at 26 W. Clinton in Joliet, as reported by WGNTV.

Joliet police reported that a 2-year-old boy somehow got out of his family’s hotel room and wandered towards an elevator, where he apparently began playing with the elevator’s buttons.

“The elevator rose then stopped. Its position left a 10-inch gap between the elevator and shaft. The toddler slipped through that gap and fell about 30-feet to the hotel’s basement,” revealed Joliet Police Lt. Jeff Allbert.

Responding emergency crews rushed the boy to Silver Cross Hospital in critical condition; he was then flown to Children’ Memorial Hospital in Chicago for further treatment.

The boy reportedly suffered a head injury in the fall, which is considered to be life-threatening.

The fall and the hotel are under investigation. There is surveillance video that showed the toddler walking down the hallway to the elevator where the accident took place. There are no cameras inside the elevator cars.
