Ventura County, CA—A California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer was awarded $49.2 million for a freeway accident that left him a quadriplegic and killed another man on Dec. 19, 2007, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

The Ventura County jury decided on the verdict on Tuesday, January 25, 2011.

The injured CHP officer Anthony Pedeferri and his wife, Carrie, were awarded $39 million in damages, while the family of the fatally injured victim, Andres Parra was awarded $10.2 million.

The CHP officer reportedly pulled over Parra on California 101 north of Ventura, when a man driving a truck slammed into the vehicle and the officer as he talking to Parra through his SUV window.

The driver of the truck, Jeremy While of Paso Robles, Calif. told investigators that two dirt bikes strapped down in the back of his truck became loose, causing him to become distracted and hit the officer and the SUV. A jury agreed that the distraction contributed to the crash and ordered Bert’s Mega Mall, whose employees tied down the dirt bikes, to pay about one-third of the verdicts.

Bert’s Mega Mall plans to appeal.
