New York, NY—A five-story fall at an Upper West Side building site claimed the lives of two construction workers on Tuesday, February 8, 2011. The fatal construction accident occurred at a project located at 150 West 83rd Street at around 10:35 a.m., as reported by the New York Post.

The two victims were not wearing safety harnesses at the time, which is violation of OSHA regulations.

Authorities reported that the two construction workers were working on a beam, when it gave out from underneath them. The two men fell five stories down an under-construction elevator shaft.

Responding emergency crews worked on the victims at the scene before rushing them to separate hospitals for continued medical treatment.

One witness, 24-year-old Anthony Alvarado recalled, “In the process of the EMTs trying to revive him [one worker], they said he was having a heart attack.”

One victim, only identified as a 49-year-old worker, was pronounced dead at Roosevelt Hospital. The other victim, a 51-year-old worker, was declared dead at St. Luke’s Hospital.

Police investigators and the Department of Buildings are investigating the construction accident. It was not reported if OSHA will be investigating as well.
