Calhoun County, MS—A violent 18-wheeler accident, which involved two Choctaw County School buses, killed three people and injured 17 others on Tuesday, February 8, 2011. The fatal 18-wheeler accident occurred on Highway 8, just south of Calhoun City, as reported by the Star Herald.
Two teachers identified as Steven Moss, 37, and Phyllis Graham, 54, of Europa, and the truck driver, George T. Bailey, of Mantachie, were killed in the collision.
Police officials reported that the school buses were transporting 60 students back to Ackerman from a function at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), when the accident occurred. A 18-wheeler side-swiped the first school bus, before slamming head-on into the second school bus driven by Moss.
Seventeen students were rushed to area hospitals by ambulance or private vehicles. One injured student was airlifted to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo for treatment. None of the injuries reportedly appeared to be life-threatening.
It is unknown what caused the semi-truck to hit the school buses. The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating the fatal 18-wheeler accident.
