Pasadena, CA — A two-vehicle accident involving a Korean church bus killed one person and injured 23 people, with 10 sustaining serious injuries. The fatal accident occurred around 11:50 a.m. Monday, February 21, 2011, as the bus was traveling westbound down slippery Highway 189, reported Fox News and the Los Angeles Times.

Authorities reported that a bus carrying mostly middle-school or high-school aged members of the Light of Love Mission Church congregation was on its way to Pasadena from a weekend retreat in Twin Lakes when the accident occurred. The driver reportedly lost control on a curve, causing the bus to veer into oncoming traffic.

The bus hit a Nissan Murano and ripped off a telephone pole, before it slid about 20 feet down an embankment.

There were 22 people on the bus and two in the other vehicle at the time of the crash.

The bus driver, Won Seok Chae, 61, was killed in the crash.

Twenty-three people were injured, 10 seriously. They were rushed to Loma Linda Medical Center and Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for treatment.

The bus driver was reportedly a professional driver who had volunteered to make the trip.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) said the highway was wet, but not icy at the time of the wreck. A full investigation is underway.
