Springfield, MA—A construction worker is in critical condition after being injured in a demolition project at the former Technical High School on Spring Street. The demolition accident occurred around 1:45 p.m., on Thursday, February 17, 2011, when the worker became trapped under a slab of falling concrete, as reported by MassLive.

According to officials, Sean McMurray of Wallingford, Conn. was doing demolition work when a slab of concrete collapsed inside the remaining area of the building. Officials believe the worker fell with the concrete flab and became pinned underneath it.

Responding emergency crews used hydraulic equipment to help extricate McMurray from the rubble.

McMurray was rushed to Baystate Medical Center for treatment. As of Friday morning, he was listed in critical condition.

McMurray is employed with Stamford Wrecking, of Trumbull, Conn.

Investigators with the state Department of Public Safety and federal Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) are looking into the work-related accident. Work at the demolition site has been temporarily suspended.

The general contractor, Skansa USA, is also working with the state Division of Capital Asset Management as investigations are ongoing.
