Houston, TXâOfficials believe downed powerlines caused many of the fast-moving wildfires in 15 counties across the Texas Panhandle that destroyed 60 homes, burned more than 110,000 acres and caused an incident that killed a 5-year-old child. The fires broke out at around noon on Sunday, February 27, 2011, reported CNN.
High winds likely caused the powerlines to fall, sparking many of the destructive wildfires, according to state forestry officials. Luckily, the wind is expected to be calmer on Monday, which will help with the firefighting efforts.
So far, forestry officials have been called in to help local fire departments respond to 25 fires in 15 counties. Firefighters battled to contain the flames through the night.
Heavy smoke shut down Interstate 20 on Sunday, due to limited visibility. Numerous accidents along the interstate in Midland County were reported, including an eight-vehicle crash that killed the 5-year-old.
At this time 60 homes have been destroyed and over 110,000 acres were burned in the wildfires.
Evacuation orders are expected to be lifted for residents of effected counties on Monday morning.
Investigations into the fires are underway.
